Vtg Hopi Kachina Doll - Carved Wood, Feathers, Turquoise - 9" T - Circa 1960s
AK029Vintage Hopi Kachina Doll - Carved Wood, Feathers, Turquoise - 9" Tall - Circa 1960s - Unsigned
The Kachina doll in your picture appears to be a traditional representation that features a turquoise mask and various feathers. These dolls, also known as Katsina dolls, are deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual practices of Southwestern Native American tribes, particularly the Hopi. The dolls are traditionally carved from cottonwood root and decorated with paint, feathers, leather, beads, and turquoise.
The turquoise mask and feathers in your doll are characteristic of the Hopi style, which often represents different Kachina spirits that embody various elements of nature and life, such as animals, weather, and ancestors. These dolls are not merely decorative items but hold significant cultural value and are often given as gifts to teach children about the Kachina spirits and their roles.
The Hopi were the original Kachina Doll carvers, using a single piece of cottonwood root. This could also be a Navajo piece, since they later began carving in their own creative way, adding leather, feathers, beads and turquoise.

This piece does not appear to have any chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs in the wood that I can see, except there are two feathers that I know of that have fallen off but which will be included with this Kachina (see pictures). This Katsina has beautiful colors (see pictures). Since these are vintage pieces of art, they do come with natural imperfections and discolorations that add to their character (zoom into photos to look for any imperfections), and there may be some signs of wear or age that are typical for an item of its age. SHIPPING NOTE: Katsina dolls are fragile by nature and may be broken in transit. I will do my best to pack it efficiently and carefully, however due to their fragility, transit damage may be unavoidable in some cases. Please keep this in mind when purchasing katsina dolls online for shipping. Luckily, katsina dolls do not decrease in value when repaired and can usually be repaired in the comfort of your home using a mixture of wood and super glue for smaller, clean breaks. For more extensive repairs from transit damage, contact an expert.
